SELECTION OF WORKS
Földbe gyökeret ereszteni (2024)
Curated by Réka Vass
Soil is not merely a material substance, but a constantly evolving, living system; a creative approach to it helps us understand processes that are invisible yet vital. Working artistically with soil is not just a matter of creative curiosity, but also one of responsibility, as our survival depends on our ability to redefine our relationship with the earth. This is the discourse entered by the creative community of the MOME course 'Taking Root in the Soil'. The resulting exhibition explores the possibilities of a deeper connection with the earth, bringing to the fore the stories that emerge through our coexistence with it.
Throughout the semester, the focus remained on sensitization and reflection: the creative process began with soil investigations and meditative practices conducted at the MOME MAG site in Balatonakali, subsequently deepening through personal memories, reflections, and individual connections to the land. The exhibition guides the visitor through the spiritual and physical planes of our collective and personal bond - or the search for it - with the soil, blending science and art.
In the spirit of this interdisciplinary approach, the nine (+1) exhibited works create a bridge between scientific knowledge and personal, emotional modes of expression. Using the language of ecological art, the creators narrate their points of connection through narrative works, reflecting on the ecological challenges of the Anthropocene and demonstrating how the state of our environment is mirrored in our own existence. These interactive installations aim to foster social sensitization and deeper public engagement with soil-related issues, prompting a dissolution of the anthropocentric worldview by opening new perspectives.
