BOGLÁRKA ERDŐS

BIO

Boglárka Erdős is a Budapest-based composer-pianist whose works explore vivid textures and expressive contrasts, often drawing inspiration from natural and poetic imagery.

In 2025, two major premieres marked new milestones in her career. A piece for two pianos, Kvitka, was commissioned by Bartók Radio for its contemporary music festival. Dedicated to the Görög Sisters Piano Duo, the work has since become a part of their standard repertoire. Her other 2025 premiere took place at the Ostrava Days Festival, one of Europe’s leading contemporary music events, where her choral work Rubent Ocelli was performed by Canticum Ostrava under the direction of Jurij Galatenko.

Boglárka was also a finalist at the International Wind Orchestra Composition Competition in South Korea, where her piece was performed in March 2025.

Earlier, she has taken the podium herself to conduct or perform several of her own works, including Books of Nature (for choir), A Short Memoir of a Sunrise (for string orchestra and chamber ensemble), 555 (for ensemble), Hommage à Scriabin, and Tranquil (for piano).

SELECTION OF WORKS

KVITKA (2025)

for two pianos

“Kvitka”  means flower in Ukrainian. The foreign title emphasises that the piece isn’t meant to tell a story or describe something directly. Instead, it relates to an essay in an abstract, poetic sense, shaped by ideas that emerged while reading The Psychology of Flower-Picking by Béla Hamvas during the composition process.

Comissioned by the ArTRIUM Contemporary Music Festival organized by the Bartók Radio, dedicated to and played by the Görög Sisters Piano Duo.

A SHORT MEMOIR OF A SUNRISE (2024)

for piano, glockenspiel, timpanis & string orchestra

When music aims to imitate a visual scene or landscape, it is often referred to as programmatic music. While I frequently draw inspiration from visual impulses, my intention is not to compose programmatic music. A case in point is my piece A Short Memoir of a Sunrise. The title may suggest an attempt to "describe" a sunrise, but my true aim was to capture the essence of the feeling that imagining such a scene evokes. This initial thought served as a starting point for the creative process but became less central as the piece evolved. I chose this title to offer the audience a glimpse into my original inspiration, if they wish to engage with it. However, the interpretation remains open, the title can be (and should be) ignored, reimagined, or reinvented, allowing each listener to experience the music in their own way.

555 (2023)

for an ensemble of 10 musicians

Visual impulses play a significant role in my creative workflow. many of my pieces are inspired by visual experiences or specific views I have encountered.

My piece 555 was inspired by the breathtaking view from Seoul Sky Tower in South Korea, which stands at 555 meters. . It was a unique experience, which gave me a new perspective on the city.
